Between energy, texture, and color, abstraction becomes language.
Stéphane Prud’homme, also known as stépru, is a Montreal-based abstract painter whose work explores the balance between structure and spontaneity. Through sweeping gestures, dense materiality, and a boldly vibrant palette, he captures inner movements and emotional landscapes that evoke both the power of nature and the complexity of the human experience.
His gestural, almost choreographic approach gives rise to vibrant canvases where deep blues, organic greens, and bursts of bright orange or red collide. Texture, ever-present, becomes a raw field of expression — a living surface that invites the eye to touch.
A passionate self-taught artist, stépru embraces the present moment in his creative process, welcoming chance as an ally. Each work is an attempt to capture the intangible: breath, tension, the fragile balance between chaos and serenity.
His paintings, often abstract yet deeply evocative and at times expressionistic, find their place in both contemporary spaces and calming interiors. They speak to those who seek to feel, rather than to understand.

This painting pulses with dynamic energy, where sweeping strokes of turquoise, teal, and cerulean blue blend into one another like ocean currents or windswept skies, forming a visual symphony of movement and texture. Amid this cool-toned fluidity, a bold burst of earthy orange-red in the lower left quadrant cuts through the composition with fierce contrast, anchoring the eye and evoking a sense of eruption, grounding, or creative tension.
The textures vary from smooth, watery blends to rough, palette-knife-like ridges, suggesting both depth and tactile immediacy. The inclusion of a small, unexpected accent of yellow in the top right adds a playful yet intentional disruption to the otherwise cohesive rhythm, almost like a punctuation mark in an otherwise flowing sentence. Altogether, the work feels like a moment of elemental collision—water and fire, calm and turbulence—expressed through a deeply instinctive, gestural process.

20”X20” acrylic canvas on wood frame
20”X20” acrylic canvas on wood frame
This painting radiates a sense of organic vitality and lush intensity, with its rich spectrum of greens ranging from luminous lime to deep forest hues. The sweeping brushstrokes feel instinctive and layered, suggesting the dynamic growth and density of a thriving natural environment—like foliage shifting in the wind or light filtering through a canopy.
There’s a quiet force in the composition, where darker central passages ground the piece while lighter, brighter strokes seem to move outward, giving it breath and rhythm. Displayed above a neutral-toned couch in a minimal, earthy interior, the artwork anchors the space with bold energy and creates a harmonious dialogue between nature and design—making it both a focal point and a source of calm.

20”X20” acrylic canvas on wood frame
This painting bursts with fluidity and movement, evoking the powerful, immersive essence of water through its layered palette of blues, turquoises, and hints of green and white. Broad, confident brushstrokes sweep across the canvas like waves or currents, while areas of textured buildup add tactile richness and depth, reminiscent of ocean spray, icy formations, or underwater terrain.
There’s an almost musical rhythm to the composition—a visual crescendo that builds from calm to kinetic, from smooth to fractured—suggesting both serenity and intensity. The piece feels alive and elemental, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in its aquatic dynamism and the ever-shifting moods of the sea.

Acrylic sur canvas, chassis de pin, 20” X 20”
Acrylic on stretched canvas, pinewood frame, 20” X 20”
This painting exudes a quiet, introspective energy through its restrained palette of creams, soft beiges, warm taupes, and earthy browns, creating a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow that feels at once organic and serene. The composition is rich with texture—broad, sweeping strokes coexist with finer, cracked or scraped areas, giving the surface a sense of movement and tactile complexity, like layers of memory or sediment unearthed.
Despite the absence of vivid color, the work is emotionally resonant, evoking natural elements such as sand, stone, bone, or weathered surfaces, and inviting the viewer into a contemplative space where absence becomes presence and silence takes form. It’s a piece that whispers rather than shouts, asking the viewer to slow down and feel its subtle rhythm.

Lava
Round 12” canvas on pinewood frame
12” Rond Acrylic sur canvas et chassis de pin

This circular abstract painting is a vivid exploration of contrast and emotional tension, where vibrant turquoise and teal tones dominate the canvas, evoking depth, calm, and fluidity, while a bold, impassioned streak of fiery orange slices across the center like a sudden eruption or energetic fault line. The composition, enhanced by rich impasto textures, feels both raw and deliberate, capturing a moment of spontaneous movement frozen in time.
The round format adds a sense of completeness or continuity—perhaps alluding to natural cycles, planets, or inner journeys—while the thick application of paint invites a tactile, almost sculptural experience. The interaction between the colors and the dynamic textures creates a compelling visual tension between serenity and disruption, stillness and motion, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in a visceral, open-ended narrative that transcends literal interpretation and instead appeals to the senses and the subconscious.

This piece has a powerful, dynamic energy to it! The bold use of contrasting colors—fiery orange against the cooler teal—creates a striking visual tension. The texture adds depth and movement, guiding the eye across the canvas in unpredictable ways. It feels spontaneous yet intentional, like there’s an underlying story or emotion being expressed through the abstract strokes.
